According to Robert Velarde (2009) in his post “What Is the Church?” (found on the Focus on the Family website), “the church consists of people not buildings. Fellowship, worship and ministry are all conducted by people, not buildings. Church structures facilitate the role of God’s people, but they do not fulfill it.”
I am in complete agreement with Velarde’s assessment. Having preached through Acts and studied the example of the early church, I believe that every Christian has the responsibility to live as disciples who make disciples in this world. The early church fellowshipped in homes where they worshipped, prayed, studied the Word, ate together, and encouraged each other so that they could go out and reproduce disciples in the world. If you are a Christian, you are the church. That is why we call ourselves GO Church. We are a small fellowship of Christians who seek to grow closer to Jesus, encourage each other, and go out into the world to help other people know the God who loves us and sets people free from all the chains that bind them so that they can live an abundant life today and look forward to the hope of perfect, eternal life with our Savior.
